I MADE A FOOL OF MYSELF

-

Q

I’m a second-year varsity student and have had my eye on a guy in third year for a while now. He’ll probably finish his engineering degree next year as he’s very brainy, so it won’t take five years.

I decided to swallow my pride and invited him to have coffee with me and told him I admire him a lot and would like to date him.

He was shocked and told me he has a girlfriend who’s at another university and that he wants to be loyal to her.

He thanked me for being honest and charmingly paid for our coffees and walked me to my car.

Now I feel like such a fool. I can’t even go to campus out of fear of running into him. What must he think of me?

I’ve never done such a thing in my life and I don’t know what came over me. What do I do? Patricia, email.

A

There’s no reason to think you made a fool of yourself. It’s a great compliment to him that you took the risk to tell him you like him and want to get to know him better. That takes some courage and is nothing to feel ashamed about.

He sounds like a decent, charming young man and I’m sure he appreciates and was flattered by what you said, but at the same time wants to be loyal to his girlfriend.

If you do see him on the campus, give him a friendly smile, greet him and simply walk past with your head high. He’s not the only fish in the sea, as the saying goes, so allow yourself to be open to meeting other guys and getting to know new people. Mr Right will make his appearance some day.
