Thomas Markle’s right royal rant

Thomas Markle says he made Meghan the duchess she is today – then rips into the British royal family too

WHEN it became clear Prince Harry had found the woman he was going to marry, people couldn’t help speculating about her family. Maybe she’d have a dodgy uncle like Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, – a black sheep with a drinking habit and womanising ways who was a bit of an embarrassment to his kin.

But who can remember that guy’s name now? And frankly, who cares when there’s a train smash of a character the likes of which the royal family has never seen before?

Because just when you thought maybe, just maybe, Thomas Markle had said his piece and was going to lie down and lick his wounded ego, up he pops again.

And his recent pop-up is nothing short of extraordinary.

In a rambling nine-hour interview over three days with The Mail on Sunday newspaper, the father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, held nothing back – it was, as one critic put it, a meandering, melodramatic, self-pitying rant.

From his modest rental home in Rosarito, Mexico, Thomas (74) attacked his daughter, ripped into the British royal family, badmouthed the palace and painted a picture of himself as a sick old man who didn’t have long to live. What’s more, he vowed, this wasn’t the last the world would see or hear from him.

Until Meghan (36), Harry (33) and the rest of the royal crew repented and allowed him some contact with his beloved Bean – Meghan’s childhood nickname – the retired TV lighting director would continue to speak out.

“I’m really hurt that she’s cut me off completely,” he said. “I used to have a phone number and text number for her personal aides at the palace, but after I said a few critical words about the royal family changing Meghan they cut me off.

“I have no way of contacting my daughter. It’s her birthday on 4 August and I want to send her a card. But if I send a birthday card to Kensington Palace, or wherever she’s living now, it’ll just be one among thousands. She’ll probably never see it.

“I thought about sending it by priority express mail but the palace will probably just soak it in water for three days to make sure it doesn’t explode.”

THOMAS claims the cold shoulder is punishment for staged paparazzi pictures of him being fitted for a wedding suit before Meghan’s nuptials. He admits it was a huge mistake – but instead of keeping quiet and allowing things to die down, he went on breakfast show Good Morning Britain recently and put his other foot in it too.

He broke protocol by discussing poli-
