OLAF PULL-APART CAKE

MAKES 36 CUPCAKES PREPARATION: 20 MIN BAKING: 15 MIN

2 boxes of vanilla- or chocolate-flavoured cake mix 4 quantities basic butter icing (recipe below left) white, brown, orange and black food colouring

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Lightly grease three 12-hollow muffin tins with nonstick spray. Line with lightly greased muffin or cupcake liners. 1 Prepare the cake mixes according to the packet instructions. Spoon into the prepared muffin or cupcake liners and bake according to the packet instructions or until a skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean. Turn out on a wire rack to cool completely. 2 Prepare the butter icing. Spoon 400ml into a separate bowl and set aside. 3 Colour the remaining icing with the white food colouring until it’s white as snow. Spoon into a piping bag fitted with a plain nozzle. 4 Colour 300ml of the rest of the icing black, 150ml brown and 50ml orange. 5 Stick two large cake boards together and use the picture left to help you pack the cupcakes in the shape of Olaf. 6 For the head, start at the top right-hand corner of the board and put two cupcakes next to each other. Repeat for the next two rows, placing the rows at a slant . You should have three rows of two cupcakes each. Between the second and third row, put a cupcake on each side for Olaf’s ears. Pack a row of three cupcakes then a row of two. 7 When making the body, work towards the bottom right-hand corner of the second board. Put a cupcake below the middle of the previous two cupcakes. Put another directly below that. Put one cupcake between these two on either side, creating a curved row. 8 Put one cupcake between the two on the right, then add another to the left and slightly lower. Create a row of three directly below, followed by a row of four then another row of three. Put a cupcake on either end of the last row for the feet. 9 Pipe white icing over each cupcake, overlapping slightly and filling gaps. 10 With the black icing, pipe an eyebrow on each of the top two cupcakes. On the second row, make Olaf’s eyes by piping a black half circle on the outer part of each cupcake. Using the white icing, pipe a blob inside the black half circles. Pipe black on top of the white to create pupils. Then pipe the carrot-shaped nose with the orange icing. Pipe the mouth in black, followed by the buttons. Then pipe a white rectangular blob for his teeth. Pipe arms and fingers in brown icing as well as three strands of hair.
