Adults need 1 000-1 200mg of calcium a day, the equivalent of three dairy portions, dietician Lize Stander says. One portion could be 150ml yoghurt, which contains about 300mg of calcium.

Kids up to the age of three need 500mg of calcium a day, while those aged three to eight need 800mg a day. Teens need about 1 300mg a day.

Labels on yoghurt make no distinction between lactose (milk sugar) and other sugars that may have been added.
