ZERO-CARBON NATURAL GAS
It’s a dilemma: we know burning fossil fuel causes potentially catastrophic climate change, yet we can’t seem to change our consumption habits.
So it’s up to science to come up with a solution – and fortunately that day doesn’t seem far off.
Net Power, an American energy startup, has established a pilot plant in Texas that uses natural gas to generate electricity without creating any greenhouse emissions. It does this by using pressurised carbon dioxide (CO ) instead of steam to power its turbines. ² During this process all CO is contained for reuse. ²
Net Power claims the cost of the process is comparable to that of a traditional gas-fired plant, which means in three to five years we could see more of these environmentally friendly plants.
