- COMPILED BY NICI DE WET

You’ve worked with many South African artists, from Black Coffee and Kwesta to Hugh Masekela and most recently Beatenberg on the hit track Aphrodite. Tell us about that. “I’m a big fan of Beatenberg – they’re an incredible band. Aphrodite was our third collaboration.

[Beatenberg frontman] Matthew Field and I wrote the song and it’s about falling in love with an ancient Greek goddess. We wanted to create something fun and light for summer.” What have you learnt from your years in the music biz? “That consistency is key to longevity. It’s vital to stay bold to keep your music exciting and, most importantly, to keep on having fun. It’s the only way to stay creative and keep the music interesting.” What’s your biggest challenge? “I feel, being from Africa and being an African musician, I’m often limited in my reach. I feel restrained from being able to share my music further than one geographical area.

“I don’t think the challenge will be around for much longer, but it’s still there.” Who’d you most like to work with? “Mark Ronson, Calvin Harris, Daft Punk, Pharrell Williams and Coldplay.” Your biggest musical inspirations? “Michael Jackson, Hugh Masekela, Ray Charles, Bob Marley, Daft Punk.”
