GOTTI
Biopic. This crime drama depicts the rise of New York mobster John Gotti (John Travolta), head of the Gambino crime family, in the criminal underworld in the ’80s.
Unfortunately it’s incredibly slow going, with not much of a pay-off at the end. At times it’s difficult to understand Travolta’s accent and his acting is unconvincing throughout most of the film.
None of the characters show any development during the long runtime and certain scenes linger far too long without clear intention.
This film might be an interesting watch for somebody who followed the trial in the ’90s but doesn’t offer much insight into the private lives of the Gotti family. – FRANCO HAVENGA 2018. 105 MIN. 16LV.
SUPER TROOPERS 2
Comedy. The band of pranksters are back. The sequel to Super Troopers finds Vermont Highway Patrol officers Foster (Paul Soter), Thorny (Jay Chandrasekhar), Farva (Kevin Heffernan), Mac (Steve Lemme) and Rabbit (Erik Stolhanske) suspended. But when law enforcement is needed at the border of a small French-Canadian town, their captain (Brian Cox) gives them a chance at redemption.
Chandrasekhar, who directed 2001’s Super Troopers, is at the helm again. Although nearly two decades have passed, the sequel seems nostalgic for the frat-boy comedies of the early 2000s. The jokes are below the belt, cheesy and as stale as (in this case 17-year-) old bread.
If you liked the first one, you’ll probably enjoy the sequel, but if you’re looking for fresh comedy, you’d be better off looking elsewhere. – LAURI KING 2018. 95 MIN. 18DLNSV. ALSO ON DSTV BOX OFFICE.
