ROCK ART

-

The San people once inhabited most of Southern Africa and their art can still be seen in Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, SA and Lesotho. Their art mostly depicts animals and hunting scenes and indicates a lot of movement. Most rock art has been found in places where the San performed rituals. As their territory and numbers dwindled, they gradually stopped painting.

The South African Rock Art Digital Archive (Sarada) contains more than 250 000 drawings, tracings and historical documents of San rock art. The project preserves San art, protects rock art sites from damage by visitors and makes this cultural heritage available to all to appreciate.
