THABISO MAKHUBELA (30)

-

Expresso presenter and one of G Q’ sB est Dressed Men of 2018. Growing up watching the way his cop dad, Phineas (58), lived out his principles informed the values Thabiso lives by.

What do you love most about your dad? He teaches and leads by example. Some of the values and principles that I carry today, I was taught purely by watching him. If he’s trying to show the importance of respect for others and for yourself, he shows that by living it. If it’s a lesson on love, he shows it by expressing love. His way of teaching has and continues to be a definite stand-out for me. What other important lessons have you learnt from him? Life is a journey. Yours is unique so you should never compete with others. Also, respect is important. Respect everyone, it builds character. And don’t be afraid to try again when things fall apart. Always be willing to try again. What style item reminds you most of your dad? Loafers. I remember the many pairs of loafers I often had to polish and shine for him on a Sunday evening when I was a child. Apart from his police work uniform boots, they were the only other shoes he wore. It’s no surprise I love loafers myself. Unfortunately, I also polish and shine them myself too – for now! What are you thinking of getting him for Father’s Day? My dad is such a simple man. He’s very sentimental so my sister and I had a plan to arrange a family photo and video shoot for Father’s Day. I’d already spoken to a stylist friend of mine – who’d have arranged to get everyone dressed up – and a photographer to set up a surprise shoot. This is likely not going to happen now with Covid-19, especially considering that I’m in Cape Town and my family is in Hammanskraal. I’m now working on collecting pictures, packaging a nice story and framing it for my dad. He’ll love that.
