Healthcare heroes

-

Having my nurse friend sharing her extra challenges since the coronavirus outbreak and reading the article about nurses (YOU, 11 June) has made me appreciate nurses even more.

Nurses in public hospitals and clinics are often criticised for incompetence without people considering the pressure they’re working under.

If they were cowards, nurses and doctors would’ve opted to stay at home during lockdown but they chose to soldier on and help us to contain coronavirus and cure those infected. For that they deserve a pat on the back. MA LEDUBUKO, BOCHUM I’m a nurse in a public hospital. I’m concerned and scared of this pandemic. It kills. It’s killed many healthcare workers as if they were nothing. It hurts. We feel more unsafe by the day.

But I did feel somehow appreciated by the world when it celebrated us during International Nurses Day. We felt loved. This profession is one that requires love and care from the world. We need this like never before. Please pray for us. GRANNY NGOEPE, KLERKSDORP I was recently disgusted by taxi passengers who frowned at a nurse as she was boarding the vehicle.

The same commuters started badmouthing her when she got off, saying she’s dangerous because she works with coronavirus patients.

I shook my head in disbelief. For heaven’s sake, we were all wearing masks and sanitised our hands before entering the taxi.

Nurses and paramedics are the frontline workers who need our full support. It’s because of their sacrifices that thousands of coronavirus patients have recovered. Remember, you might end up in the hands of the nurses you’re now avoiding like lepers. SP MOFFAT, MAMELODI EAST Healthcare workers and frontline responders are society’s most precious defence line against Covid-19.

They continue to perform their noble duty to save people’s lives while risking their own. They’re our sleep-deprived heroes who come armed with stethoscopes and thermometers.

The hospital is their theatre of war and the ventilator often the weapon of last resort. They’ve stared at desperate faces stricken with the virus and healed them. These are our true heroes. FAROUK ARAIE, BENONI
