She’ s struggled with self-harm and depression

-

In one scene in the documentary, Billie (19) flips through pages of her journal. One page features lyrics about selfharm from a time she says was at the peak of her depression. “I was like 14, 15. I had razors hidden in places and I had

Band-Aids hidden in a little corner of my room, and I always had Band-Aids on my wrists,” she said. “I was locking myself in the bathroom and making myself bleed because I thought I deserved it.”

Although she’s yet to see it, for DREW BARRYMORE the documentary Framing Britney Spears has brought up a lot of emotions. She feels for Britney and other women who, like her, have spent much of their lives in the spotlight, the actress and talk-show host told DJ Howard Stern. As a child star, she was wild with too many resources and a mom who wanted to be her friend instead of her mother, Drew (46) said. “I was going to clubs and not going to school and stealing my mom’s car and, you know, I was out of control. Sometimes it was as humorous as that and sometimes I was just so angry that I’d go off and then I’d get thrown in the thing,” she said, explaining that “the thing” was a psychiatric ward where she was placed for 18 months at age 13.

The Santa Clarita Diet star said at first she was so angry she couldn’t see straight, but after six to eight months of therapy, she started to get it together.

The Golden Globe winner said she’s forgiven her actress mom, JAID (74). “I think she lived in a lot of pain that I wouldn’t talk to her for a long time. I’m really glad there’s healing there. I feel goodness toward my mom. I feel empathy and understanding.” Drew’s daughters, Olive (8) and Frankie (6) – whose father is her third ex-husband, art consultant Will Kopelman (42) – have also met their grandmother. “But there’s real boundaries and distance and a lot of respect.”

‘You couldn’t mess around in there and if you did, you’d get thrown either in a padded room or get put in stretcher restraints and tied up’ – DREW ON THE PSYCH WARD
