The return of Robin Thicke

After a seven-year break the R&B crooner is back with a new album

HEAVENLY NEW SOUND Robin Thicke is reintroducing himself with the release of his eighth album, On Earth, and in Heaven.

“With this album, my intentions are pure again,” the 43-year-old told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe.

“I want to make great music that spreads love, that feels like a warm blanket, that brings people closer together, that helps heal wounds and brings bonds back. That’s what this music has done for me and that’s what I wanted to do for others.”

The first single, Look Easy, has entered the charts and he’s dedicated the music video to “all the frontline workers, mothers, daughters and grandmothers of the world”. EMERGING FROM ADVERSITY Making music hasn’t been the singer’s top priority for a long while. In 2014 he went through a bitter divorce from actress Paula Patton (45). He’s now engaged to model April Love Geary (26) and they welcomed their third child in December.

Two years after his divorce from Paula, he lost his dad, Growing Pains star Alan Thicke (69), who died from a ruptured aorta.

Then, in 2018, he and longtime collaborator Pharrell Williams had to pay $5 million (then about R65m) to Marvin Gaye’s estate after they lost a copyright infringement lawsuit.

The family claimed the pair copied parts of the late soul singer’s song Got To Give It Up on their 2013 party hit Blurred Lines. Little wonder Thicke says his new album is “like the sunshine coming out after the rain”. FINDING INSPIRATION The singer says the death of his musical mentor, Uptown Records founder Andre Harrell (60), last year was a turning point for him.

“I looked in the mirror and I said, ‘I’m not going to be insecure anymore. I’m not going to let these days go by . . . I’m going to do whatI always wanted to do and be the person I wanted to be.’ And then the music came quickly. But it started with that big turn.”

He also credits Pharrell, one of his co-writers on the new album. “He’s one of my favourite songwriters and producers and humans. He’s been there for me for years. After my first album came out [A Beautiful World], he kind of took me under his wing.” SOURCE: USATODAY.COM
