Indie-rock darling Phoebe Bridgers

- BY NICI DE WET

GRAMMY SHINE The 26-year-old picked up four nominations at this year’s Grammy Awards – best new artist, best alternative music album for Punisher, best rock performance and best rock song for Kyoto.

She walked the red carpet with her brother, Jackson Bridgers, and in what’s become her signature look – a skeleton dress. “I wear a skeleton costume all the time,” she told E! host Giuliana Rancic, adding that the Thom Browne dress she wore debuted on the runway in October 2017 and was her initial inspiration.

MUSICAL KID She grew up in Pasadena, California, and as a youngster busked at the local farmer’s market for extra money.

She attended a high school for the arts where she studied vocal jazz.

“None of my family are musicians, but there was a lot of classic rock and country going on. I always wanted to sing. As soon as I expressed an interest my mom was super supportive of me.”

BIG BREAK She got her big break when she met singer-songwriter Ryan Adams through a mutual friend who signed her to his record label. In January 2017 she released the track Smoke Signals and opened for US singer Conor Oberst (whom she cites as one of her biggest musical inspirations) on his European tour. In September 2017 she released her debut album, Stranger in the Alps.

PUNISHER She released her second album, Punisher, in June last year to widespread positive reviews.

At the time she said, “I’m not delaying this record until things go back to ‘normal’ because I don’t think they should. Here it is.”

The title derives its name from an in-joke among musicians – a punisher is an overzealous fan.

Kid Cudi chose her to feature on Lovin’ Me, a track off his 2020 album, Man on the Moon III: The Chosen.

The multiple Grammy nominee is indie rock’s latest darling
