Spotlight on actress Chloë Grace Moretz
The actress gives us inside info on her most challenging role yet
THE WEDDING PLANNER Chloë (24) plays Kayla, a hotel wedding planner, in this animated live-action mashup with classic cartoon characters Tom and Jerry.
Kayla enlists Tom to capture and get rid of Jerry, who’s moved into one of New York City’s most lavish hotels – right before the wedding of the decade, which is set to take place at the hotel.
Unaware of the duo’s lifelong rivalry, Kayla unleashes a cat-and-mouse war that threatens to ruin the big day, employees’ careers and the hotel itself.
Playing Kayla, said Chloë, has made her a better actress. The most challenging part of her role was acting opposite a stick. “Tom was a stick with a name tag – seriously. For Jerry at least I had a little scale model of him.
“It was strange,” said Chloë on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. “Half of the time I was improvising opposite nothing because [Tom and Jerry are] silent characters.
“I’d imagine in my head what they’re improvising back, then continue in the scene. So it was definitely a brain twister.”
“All in all it was very interesting to be able to improv and create with the animators and push the boundaries of what we could achieve.”
BORN TO ACT Chloë got her first acting gig when she was six years old in the movie Heart of the Beholder. On being a child actor, she said the pros had outweighed the cons of her career choice.
“I’ve had a wonderful platform, and now also a massive breadth of fans who have grown with me and who I feel like I know personally in a lot of ways.”
Chloë’s other memorable movies include Kick-Ass, The Equalizer, Carrie, Let Me In and Greta.
“At the age when children shouldn’t even act, she was kind of extraordinary,” said Neil Jordan, who directed her the 2018 drama Greta.
BRIGHT FUTURE AHEAD The actress has some big movies ahead too, including another animated gig, this time as Wednesday Addams in the sequel to the cartoon adaptation of The Addams Family, which will also star the voices of Charlize Theron, Finn Wolfhard, Nick Kroll, Snoop Dogg, and Bette Midler.
The actress will also star as Flynne Fisher in the Amazon Prime series The Peripheral, based on William Gibson’s novel of the same name.
“I want to be America’s sweetheart,” says Chloë about her future goals. “I want people to really love me and what I’ve done and let me be a part of their lives at home.”
