R&B super-duo Silk Sonic
All you need to know about the R&B duo
MUSICAL SUPER DUO Silk Sonic combines the incredible talents of modern funk kings – acclaimed singers, songwriters, record producers and multi-instrumentalists Bruno Mars (35) and Anderson .Paak (35).
The duo met in 2017 when Anderson opened for Bruno’s worldwide 24K Magic tour and a bromance was born.
After years of jamming together, this year they formed Silk Sonic.
LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN Their debut single, Leave the Door Open, dropped last month and has enjoyed huge success. Billboard described it as a “finger-snapping, slinky R&B jam” and fans cannot get enough of its old-school R&B flavour.
The song required a “lot of patience” to create, Anderson said. “A lot of meat went into this song.”
In the music video he sings and plays drums. “He’s one of the baddest drummers I’ve ever seen,” Bruno said. “He comes from a different era.”
GRAMMY TAKEOVER Silk Sonic performed live for the first time at this year’s Grammy Awards, and Anderson also took home the gong for best melodic rap performance for his track Lockdown.
It follows wins at the 2020 Grammys where he won best R&B album for Ventura and best R&B performance for Come Home and his best rap performance win at the 2019 Grammys for his track Bubblin.
Bruno is a 11-time Grammy winner. His last album, 24K Magic, won six awards at the 2018 ceremony, including album of the year.
UPCOMING ALBUM Great news for fans is there’s an album in the works. Titled An Evening with Silk Sonic, it will be “hosted” by funk legend Bootsy Collins, who also came up with their name.
“We had a bunch of different names – RoboCop Funk, The Conquistadors, The Atlantic Stars . . . Lava Lamps,” Bruno explained. “Bootsy offered up Silk Sonic and we loved it.”
