This is what you’ll need for an at-home facial.

Face-cleansing sponges They often come in a pack, are reusable and can be used for various steps such as cleansing and removing makeup. Facial roller These are ideal for massaging the face and helping product absorption. With frequent use, they stimulate blood flow and make skin look brighter and feel firmer. Bowls Two large ones for cleansing. Clean makeup brush This will be for applying a mask or peel. Flat foundation brushes work better. Make sure it’s squeaky clean.

STEP 1: DOUBLE CLEANSE Use a gentle cleanser together with the sponges to cleanse the skin twice. This will ensure thorough removal of dirt on the skin’s surface. STEP 2: EXFOLIATE Use either a facial brush or an exfoliating gel to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores. Be extra gentle if the skin is dry, sensitive or acne-prone.

STEP 3: MASK/PEEL Depending on the skin’s needs, use either a peel, sheet, homemade or bottled mask. Follow the instructions on the packaging if you’re using a store-bought mask or make your own (see Make Your Own Mask, below). Remove the wash-off or homemade mask or peel using clean water and sponges. STEP 4: MASSAGE AND MOISTURISE

If you used a wash-off or peel-off mask, apply an oil serum and massage it in using the roller until it’s fully absorbed into skin, and follow with a moisturiser. If you used a peel, apply a thick moisturiser and massage it in using the roller.

If you used a sheet mask, use the facial roller to rub in excess product that remains after you’ve removed the mask. Follow up with a moisturiser. STEP 5: SPF Apply sunscreen to seal everything in. If you have your Mother’s Day pamper session in the evening, you can skip the SPF, but be sure to apply it first thing in the morning.
