I THINK I WILL BENEFIT FROM THERAPY

-

I read your column every week and sometimes I can really relate to the things people are going through. You often recommend that people consult with a psychologist and I feel it’s something I could benefit from.

The thing is, I earn an average salary and can’t see how I could afford to pay the R1 000 or more fee per session. Is there a free or cheap therapy service somewhere that I don’t know about?

Please can you point me in the right direction? I’m tired of trying to figure stuff out by myself and spending so much time thinking about it. I feel this is my last chance to act. Seton, email

I think most people can benefit from therapy, especially in the time that we find ourselves in now. Life has been really challenging for many people.

Also, we’ve had more time for reflection, introspection and thinking about what we really want from life – and for some people this brings up emotional issues they may have trouble getting to grips with by themselves. These issues may be best addressed and worked through with a psychologist.

Most state hospitals have psychologists since psychology graduates have to complete a year of training at a state institution. They do not receive a licence for private practice if they haven’t done this period of community service.

So you can go to your nearest state hospital and ask to be referred to a psychologist for treatment. Tell them you’re unable to afford a private psychologist.

Because of the pandemic some hospitals have made arrangements for their psychologists to see patients in buildings adjacent to the hospital or even using Skype if the patient has access to it. Perhaps, instead of going to the hospital, you should call them first to find out what the procedure is.
