Suri Cruise turns 15
After a year of lockdown Suri Cruise was thrilled to be able to celebrate her 15th birthday with a posse of pals on the streets of New York
HER name means princess in Hebrew and there’s no doubt she’s the queen of her mother’s heart. Suri Cruise recently celebrated her 15th birthday and proud mom Katie Holmes took to Instagram to share some cute throwback pics of her only child.
“Happy 15th birthday, sweetheart,” she said. “I love you.”
And there’s little doubt she does. When it comes to moms and daughters, things don’t get much tighter than these two, who’ve been facing the world together ever since Katie (42) and Tom Cruise (58) split back in 2012.
Tom famously hasn’t seen his daughter since she was six years old but those in the know say Katie has done everything in her power to ensure Suri hasn’t felt deprived of a dad.
“She’s a wonderful mom,” a friend says. “She’s everything to Suri.”
The pair have only grown closer in lockdown and last year Katie told Vogue it was a special time for them.
“To live for a moment in time without the pressure of results and instead appreciate the natural rhythms of mother and daughter was the most precious gift,” she said.
When Suri turned 14, their hometown New York was being decimated by the pandemic and the city was more grim than a ghost town. The teen had a socially distanced spring-themed party which Katie described as a “special moment”.
Which it no doubt was – but it’s safe to say Suri was delighted this year when she could step onto the streets with a gaggle of gal pals and enjoy the city.
Ever stylish, Suri looked chic in lowrise denims, a white cropped top, grey sneakers and a leather jacket as the girls enjoyed ice cream, chatted, laughed and posed for pics and selfies.
KATIE has always strived to keep her daughter out of the limelight as much as possible but she’s also been adamant her daughter should lead as normal a life as possible.
“We were followed a lot when she was little but I really wanted her outside so I would walk her around the parks at, like, six in the morning so no one could see us,” she says.
One day while out for their sunrise stroll they were spotted by a photographer and Suri, Katie says, took it all in her stride.
“She was two at the time and she starts waving at the camera. She’s pretty special.”
Since then Suri has been snapped out and about in the city with her mom several times but it’s par for the course, Katie knows.
She’s more concerned about her growing up safe and sound in an often brutal world. “There is so much bad news and hate and things that don’t make sense,” she says. “The atmosphere around the world is terrifying.”
Suri attends the prestigious private school Avenues: The World School in New York, believed to cost $56 000 (about R780 000) a year in fees.
She’s an active kid who has been doing ballet since she was a tot and enjoys music. She used to take guitar lessons but, according to an insider, dropped them after a disagreement with a teacher.
Suri also enjoys painting, sewing and writing and loves going to the theatre with her mom – the pair have been spotted regularly on Broadway taking in shows such as Dear Evan Hansen, Finding Neverland and School of Rock.
“They’re the best of friends,” a family friend says. “They love spending time together.”
