CONGRATULATIONS poured in for pop-rap artist DOJA CAT when she recently took home her first Grammy award. “I like to downplay s**t, but this is a big deal,” she said tearfully on stage.
But fans of the Kiss Me More hitmaker were a little confused when her father, South African actor DUMISANI DLAMINI, decided to thank her followers for supporting the star.
“Just wanted to thank everyone who supported my child Zandile. God bless you all,” the 58-year-old shared in a now-deleted post on Instagram along with a picture of the musician.
Reason for the shock: Doja, who was born in Los Angeles, California, and lived with her mother, Jewish-American artist Deborah Elizabeth Sawyer, has previously said that she doesn’t know her father.
“I have never [met him], and he’s on Instagram. And he comments on my pictures sometimes, maybe not anymore, but he did a few months ago,” Doja, whose real name is Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, said in an interview in 2019.
“He’s an incredible dancer and great actor, but yeah, I don’t know him very well.”
The 26-year-old also confirmed this to veteran US actress Whoopi Goldberg, who worked with Dumisani on Sarafina. “Yeah, isn’t that crazy. I didn’t get to meet him but you did.”
Many fans dragged Dumisani, who’d previously claimed Doja’s management had blocked all his efforts to reach out to her, for being a deadbeat dad.
“You have no shame,” said one follower. “You’ve never even met her?”
