OUR ANIMAL CARERS

I totally agree about the healing power of cats (YOU, 21 July). During the last 18 months of my mom’s life she had vascular dementia. She could remember her school days but not if she’d had lunch.

She would often get confused and fearful and there was nothing we could do to help. Drugs and medication made no difference, but Ginger, her cat, could calm her down in seconds.

Whenever my mom was getting scared or stressed or confused, Ginger would jump on her lap.

Within seconds she was stroking him, he was purring and she was calm.

The last 18 months of my mom’s life were awful. She was in a strange place in her mind, often asking to go home and wondering where her mom was. She didn’t recognise us very often, but Ginger was always there to make her feel safe and calm her down.

Ginger died a few years after my mom and I will always be grateful to him for being able to help her during those last months in a way no one else could.

My cat Dickens is 20 and he always knows if I am stressed or upset. I notice he also has the power to calm me down.

My mom used to joke that cats came from outer space to help the Egyptians to build their pyramids. They were treated as gods, liked it and stayed. I definitely know they have magic inside of them. AMANDA, EMAIL old adages. Now I just get fed up with it.

A good example was when one of our politicians, who was being interviewed on television, answered a question with, “We’ll burn (instead of cross) that bridge when we come to it”.

Anyone can “have their cake and eat

SA resident in the village had two cats. One day one of them, Mo, decided to visit the frail care section How did he know where to go? Crying at the door, he was let in and went straight to a patient in bed, jumped up and gave his care and comfort.

This started a day/night round of giving care, love and peace to those who needed it.

One day his owner was unwell, so that night Mo went home and gave love and care. Next morning back to his task at frail care. Mo is an angel in a cat suit. JEAN, EMAIL

SI’m not a cat-lover but I think little kittens are sweet. I am a dog person. All my life I have had dogs and to me they are more than pets.

They give you unconditional love, companionship, many laughs. My present dog is now four years old and is so lovable. He just wants to snuggle up with me in the cold and greets me in the morning with a lick and play before we get out of bed. He has his bed on my bed. He understands what I say to him and loves a ride in the car.

When you are sitting down with a dog next to you and stroking him, all your troubles melt away.

The world would be a much better place if all people were animal lovers. DOG LOVER, EMAIL it”. After all, that’s why we have cake. However, one cannot eat their cake and still have it.

If you’re going to make use of an adage, please ensure you understand what you’re actually meaning to say. D DANKS, EMAIL
