THE MONEY I INHERITED IS A BURDEN

-

Q My uncle died a year ago and I was his favourite nephew, so I inherited his fortune. There also aren’t any other family members. Like most people, I thought that having such a huge amount of money would make me happy because it means I can now do whatever I want to do. I don’t need to work ever again.

But as life has gone on, I’ve realised it is a curse and not a blessing to inherit such a lot of money. The friends I have now are only there to have fun because my money is paying for the fun.

Life is boring and I don’t seem to have any purpose anymore. It’s really not as much fun as people think it is to simply walk into a dealership and buy a new car if you can afford to buy a couple of the cars there. And all the women I date turn out to be gold-diggers. What can I do to make my life meaningful again? Brandon, email

A Money can indeed be a burden and not necessarily a blessing. It really depends on how you live your life and what you do with the money. It seems as if you’ve focused on using your money to have fun and have not put it to work or use it for good.

Helping people in need can give great purpose to your life. Do some research and think about what good you could do and how you really want to spend your money. You could help young entrepreneurs who want to start a business.

You could start your own business – not because you need money but to give work opportunities to people and to keep yourself busy. You could donate money to medical research or to saving animals that are on the verge of extinction.

Having money affords you wonderful opportunities to help others and see life from another perspective – which is probably what your uncle wanted to give you. Use it well and you will no doubt meet some wonderful, genuine and caring people in the process.
