AYANDA THABETHE TALKS AFRICA
BRIGHT, bold and refined – that’s what they’re calling The Home Channel’s new weekly panAfrican lifestyle show Afrimaxx, hosted by the beautiful and bubbly AYANDA THABETHE. We caught up with Ayanda (36) to chat all things Africa and what makes her proud to be part of this amazing continent.
What makes you proudly South African? We’ve come so far as a country. We’re ever-evolving, everchanging. We’re very resilient people. We still have so many challenges yet you see people waking up every day and doing their best with what they have, and under the circumstances as well.
What is your favourite African cuisine? I am a Durban girl so I love samp, I love amadombolo (dumplings), I really love traditional food. There’s nothing that beats home food. One of my favourite dishes is actually aMaas noPhutu (cultured milk and crumbly pap).
You’re very much a citizen of the world, constantly travelling. What is the bit of Africa you take with you every time? Have you noticed that in other countries, they actually don’t greet each other? One thing I’ve noticed about Africa is that we are people with such humility. We get into a lift, we get into a space and we say “Hello”. I’ve caught myself one or two times where I’ve greeted someone and I didn’t get a response and I was very confused. I think I take that humility that comes with being African with me.
