STABBING SHOCKER Rushdie on the road to recovery

-

RENOWNED author Salman Rushdie has a long road to recovery ahead of him after he was savagely stabbed at a public event in New York. The author, who penned the controversial novel The Satanic Verses, was attacked on stage at a conference where he was about to talk about free speech.

Rushdie (75) remains in hospital where he’s recovering from surgery to his multiple stab wounds. He may lose an eye.

“Though his lifechanging injuries are severe, his usual feisty and defiant sense of humour remains intact,” his publisher, Andrew Wylie, said in a statement.

A suspect was arrested for the attack after staff and guests at the conference rushed the stage and held him down. Hadi Matar (24) has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and assault charges. Matar, who’s reportedly only read two pages of The Satanic Verses, says he resents Rushdie because he “attacked Islam”.

He faces up to 32 years in jail.
