BELOVED WALRUS PUT DOWN

Authorities in Norway have euthanised (see Word of the Week) Freya, a 600kg walrus. Freya became a celeb after locals flocked to see her in the capital city, Oslo.

However, authorities feared the huge animal could injure or kill one of the many people who had been gathering around her to take photos, throw objects and even swim in the water near her as she bathed in the sun or slept.

“We have great regard for animal welfare, but human life and safety must take precedence,” a spokesperson says.
