THE BURDEN OF PROOF

“My neighbour owes me R500 and he won’t pay up. What should I do?” a man asks his lawyer. “Do you have any proof he owes you the money?” asks the lawyer. “Nope,” replies the man. “Ok, then write him a letter asking him for the R5 000 he owes you,” says the lawyer. “But it’s only R500,” replies the man. “Precisely. That’s what he’ll reply and then you’ll have your proof!”
