SAFETY FIRST
In 2018, F1’s much-criticised safety halo was introduced. The design was slammed by fans, pundits and drivers alike, with traditionalists unhappy about it spelling the end to the open cockpit. “We are protecting against a freak accident that is one in a million,” German driver Nicolas Hülkenberg lamented then.
It’s now 2022 and that “one in a million” freak accident has happened at least seven times. The most jaw-dropping of all was Zhou Guanyu (LEFT) careering upside down across the track then the gravel and then slamming into the barriers at the British GP at Silverstone in July.
