HEY, BIG SPENDERS
Chelsea signed 11 new players before the transfer window closed in September, spending a whopping £271m (R5,4 billion) on recruitment – a record for an English Premier League side. Wesley Fofana, bought from Leicester, cost £69,5m (R1,3bn) and was the most expensive of the new signings. Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville feels the transfer splurge was questionable. “Chelsea have got an owner saying, ‘I’m taking over, I’m the man now, I’m going to go out and basically buy the players.’
“And then they’re linked with every player Barcelona want, every player City want, every player Man United want. It’s just scattergun and unsustainable. I doubt this approach will go well.”
