Princess Beatrice (34)
Beatrice, who’s now ninth in the line of succession, will have a more significant role in the royal family. She’s set to become one of her uncle Charles’ five Counsellors of State, in line with the 1937 Regency Act.
This act allows the monarch’s spouse and the next four adults in the line of succession to carry out business on behalf of the monarch. She joins William and Harry and her father, Prince Andrew, as one of the four.
The counsellors can’t carry out any key constitutional roles, such as dealing with Commonwealth matters, the dissolving of Parliament – unless on specific instruction from the king – or appointing a prime minister.
In this new role Beatrice can stand in for the king at Privy Council meetings. The council are senior politicians who advise the monarch, sign routine documents and receive the credentials of new ambassadors to the UK.
