Edward (58) and Sophie (57)

Prince Edward will likely gain the Duke of Edinburgh title, as his late father requested. The title is currently held by Charles, who inherited it from Prince Phillip.

If Edward succeeds his father as the Duke of Edinburgh, he’ll have a hand in the programme his father started to support young people’s development. His wife, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, would also qualify for a raise in royal status to Duchess of Edinburgh – a title the queen had.

Sophie has worked with sexual-violence victims and travelled to countries affected by conflict. She also works to promote women’s rights and gender balance and equality in the workplace.

Charles was thought to have agreed with Philip about Edward becoming Duke of Edinburgh. Edward had his doubts though.

“It was fine in theory, ages ago when it was sort of a pipe dream of my father’s,” he told the BBC before his mother’s death. “And of course, it will depend on whether or not the Prince of Wales, when he becomes king, will do that, so we’ll wait and see.”

Dickie Arbiter, a former press officer for Buckingham Palace, says Charles won’t defy his father’s wishes.
