American football player Manti Te’o (now 31) had the world at his feet when he was at university. He was a star athlete, sought after by teams across the country, but it all came apart after he met a woman he didn’t know online, a student at Stanford University named Lennay Kekua.

The couple fell in love over the course of phone conversations and Manti was left devastated when he found out she’d died. But things took a bizarre turn when journalists from Deadline.com discovered that Lennay wasn’t just dead – she’d never existed at all.

“She” was Ronaiah Tuiasosopo – who has since transitioned into a woman and goes by Naya – a classmate of the person whose photos were used on “Lennay’s” Facebook page. The story unfolds in the words of Manti, Naya and others involved.
