Heavy smoke has travelled across the US as firefighters battle blazes in California, Washington and Oregon. The fire, known as the Mosquito Fire, has not only threatened thousands of homes and livelihoods, but it has also produced unhealthy and hazardous air in the region. Residents are being encouraged to stay indoors. “People need to take more precautions than usual and avoid all outdoor activity if possible,” says meteorologist Scott McGuire. “If you do have to be outside, take more frequent breaks and stay hydrated. This should be taken very seriously,” he says.
