WORLD’S LONELIEST TREE TO HELP IN CLIMATE CHANGE RESEARCH

-

New Zealand’s uninhabited Campbell Island (ABOVE) is home to a giant tree that might help unlock secrets about carbon sinks on our planet. Carbon sinks are areas that absorb more carbon from the atmosphere than they release, making it important in the fight against climate change. Plants, the ocean and soil are just some examples of carbon sinks. The nine-metretall Sitka spruce, situated around 700km south of New Zealand, holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s most remote tree. Scientists say it could help them understand what is happening with the absorption of carbon dioxide in the Southern Ocean.
