He’s had knee and back injuries, but always managed a comeback. After losing in the 2021 Wimbledon quarterfinals he underwent another knee operation, withdrew from the US Open and became unranked for the first time.

It was time to bow out, he said. “The past three years have presented me with challenges. I’ve worked hard to return to competitive form. But I know my body’s limits and its message is clear.”
