MY EXPERIENCE IN A SHELTER

-

In March I ended up in a shelter for abused women and children in Cape Town. What an eye-opener!

I’ve never witnessed so many power-plays and so much abuse and disdain for the poor and needy. It was like a horror story, and the violations of human rights are beyond human comprehension.

Now I understand why: the government hasn’t regulated this industry. So NGOs can get subsidies from the government, and they’re just given a mandate by policymakers (which they never adhere to, and nobody checks up on them to see if they comply).

It’s like a meat market, rife with abuse and well-hidden from the government and corporate donor’s eyes.

It’s time to open this can of worms and turn this situation around. Stop shelter management exploiting those who are already poor and broken. It’s a sick and sad situation.

Let’s get the basics right first. HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST, CAPE TOWN
