Probe into deadly stampede
INDONESIAN authorities are investigating a deadly stampede that followed a domestic-league soccer match which left 125 people dead – one of the worst sport-stadium disasters in history.
Chaos broke out in the city of Malang after Persebaya Surabaya defeated local rivals Arema Malang. Disappointed, Arema supporters threw bottles and stormed the pitch. Police fired teargas into the crowd, which caused a crush.
Football fan Felix Tumbaz’s right leg was injured when it was hit by a teargas canister. “How could such a tragedy occur and kill so many people?” he says. The investigation should take two weeks, officials say.
