WATER QUALITY UNDER THREAT
Nutrients such as phosphorous and nitrogen from fertilisers and animal feed are causing pollution in more than 40 US states, according to a new study. Experts believe this is because of warmer winters brought on by climate change. Colder winter temperatures previously kept nutrients frozen until spring when plants could help absorb the excess. But as Earth has warmed up, rain and melting snow carry nutrients into lakes, rivers and streams during winter when plants are dormant, affecting water quality.
