Comic Con’s comeback
THOUSANDS of fans, dressed as their favourite comic book and movie characters, recently flocked to New York in the USA for Comic Con.
The annual event is one of the largest in the world and regularly attracts about 200 000 people from across the globe – all kitted out as superheroes like Batman and Superman, villains from the Game of Thrones series and fantastic creatures from the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.
The convention began in 1970 when a small group of comics, movie and science-fiction fans from San Diego put on an event attended by just 300 people to celebrate some of the best-known characters in comics, sci-fi and fantasy.
More than 50 years later, Comic Con has grown into a global phenomenon and is widely recognised as the premier pop culture convention in the world.
Celebrities who play some of the best-loved characters on screen get to engage and chat to fans about their upcoming projects during the event.
“We love being a part of these events,” says Brian Crosby, creative director of themed entertainment at Marvel. “It’s in our DNA.”
