KING PROTEA

This beautiful, hardy plant flourishes in conditions where other plants would die

- COMPILED BY CHUNDRÉ FILIPPUS INFOGRAPHIC: MICHAEL DE LUCCHI

THE king protea is South Africa’s national flower and gets its name from the fact that the flower looks like a crown. It’s also the largest flower of all the protea species. The flower is depicted on our country’s coat of arms and is also the emblem of the national cricket team, the Proteas. Images of the king protea also appear on South African birth certificates and passports, as well as on the R5 coin.
