DEPENDANT ON FIRE

King proteas depend on veld fires for reproduction. The seed is surrounded by a tough cone and can remain dormant for longer than a year until a fire occurs. The heat from the flames splits the cone open to release the seed, which is then distributed by the wind, rodents or birds.
