MARIAH, THE ALT-ROCKER

- – COMPILED BY LARA ATSON

Listen up, Lambies!

Mariah Carey’s iconic sixth album, Butterfly (1997), has been reissued on its 25th anniversary and fans can look forward to eight bonus tracks, new arrangements of old hits and a re-recording of The Roof with Brandy.

And that’s not all that’s new – Mariah has revealed that in 1995, while making her fifth album, Daydream, she also recorded an alt-rock album, Someone’s Ugly Daughter, under the name Chick.

She’s unearthed her “lost” album and hopes to release it, she said in a recent interview.

Her record company, Columbia Records, rejected the rock album at the time and it was later released by a group called Chick, with her vocals replaced with that of her friend, Clarissa Dane.

Mimi produced and sang backing vocals throughout the Chick version and co-wrote all but one of the tracks.

“This was my outlet and nobody knew about it,” she said. “I honestly wanted to put the record out back then . . . and let them discover that it was me, but that idea was squashed.” Mariah has hinted that her lost album may be released soon, along with an updated version of it.
