The organisation was first called the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund and provided urgent food and healthcare to mothers and children in countries that had been affected by World War II. Unicef has since expanded and focuses on providing special protection for disadvantaged children who have experienced violence, extreme poverty, natural disasters or are victims of war. The organisation is now focusing its attention on the effects of global warming on children.
