WHY LAYERING IS SO IMPORTANT
A-list dermatologist Harold A Lancer – who’s worked with the likes of Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian – says correct layering means more noticeable results.
“If you’ve been using a product and not seeing results, you could be applying it at the wrong time of day or in the incorrect order.” More reasons include:
Layering makes active ingredients more effective. Skincare products combine active and inactive ingredients and when you layer correctly, you allow the active ingredients to work effectively. Proper layering also increases product absorption.
It helps you combine ingredients safely.
Knowing which ingredients complement each other, such as retinol with peptides, and which don’t, such as vitamin C serum with retinol, is the key to keeping your skin healthy.
How to layer
A basic rule of thumb is to go by the order of your products’ consistency: start with lightweight liquids and end with heavier, thicker creams.
“This way you’ll get the most out of each product. If you don’t, you could be cancelling out the benefits of the previous product you’ve applied,” says Lucy Hilson, co-founder of beauty brand SKN Rehab.
