PAINTING IS THE WRONG WAY UP

-

A painting by Dutch artist, Piet Mondrian, has been hanging the wrong way round in a gallery for 75 years. Mondrian created the artwork, titled New York City I, back in 1941. The curator of the German museum where the painting has been exhibited since 1980 began researching the work and realised it should actually be the other way around. Mondrian didn’t sign the painting, which made it difficult to know which side is up. The artwork is bound with adhesive tape and if gravity were to act on the painting in the opposite direction, if it were hung the right way up, the tape might come loose.
