MORA SA TRAILS
There are thousands of hiking trails in SA (including unregistered ones). The website alltrails.com/south-africa provides information on 3 460 of them. Here are a few more that will take your breath away as you experience our country’s natural beauty from up close:
TANKWA CAMINO
This 256,6km-route in the Northern Cape takes you from Calvinia to Ceres through arid Karoo landscapes with incredible sunrises and sunsets.
DIE HARDEMAN SE PAD
The name translates to “the tough guy’s road”, but to make it easier you can “slack-pack” (someone else carries your backpack) this three-day route around the picturesque town of Loxton in the Northern Cape. A highlight is the overnight accommodation in two iconic corbelled houses – igloo-like stone structures unique to the area.
HENNOPS HIKING TRAIL
This hike in Gauteng has three potential routes and is a great option for city folk from Johannesburg and Pretoria. A suspension bridge and cable car allow you to cross the beautiful Hennops river at two places, and interesting sites include an underground cave.
DRAKENSBERG GRAND TRAVERSE
Hikers looking for a challenge can tackle this unmarked mountain route of more than 200km (BELOW). You’ll have to brave a few peaks along the way, including Mont-Aux-Sources, Champagne Castle, Mafadi and Giant’s Castle.
