SHEEPISH BUSINESS
More than 1 200 sheep paraded through the centre of Madrid for the Transhumance Festival recently. Transhumance is the act of moving livestock and flocks from one region to another as the seasons change. For instance, shepherds need to take their animals from their summer fields to warmer regions for the icy winter. The day is part of a traditional Spanish event that has been held since 1994.
Several other cities in Europe have since organised similar events which are believed to have a positive impact on biodiversity and environmental sustainability.
