Eczema is the most com­mon skin prob­lem amongst un­der­fives. Caused by an al­ler­gic re­ac­tion to some­thing in the child’s en­vi­ron­ment, such as pollen, chlo­rine, wash­ing de­ter­gents or other chem­i­cals in the house­hold. It can also be due to al­ler­gies.

Symp­toms

Dry, itchy skin patches. Skin may be­come in­fected through scratch­ing.

Treat­ment

Elim­i­nate cause of the al­ler­gic re­ac­tion, if pos­si­ble.

Keep skin mois­turised and do not scratch.

An­ti­his­tamines and steroid creams may be pre­scribed.
