Does everything return back to normal down there?

-

I love my wife and I am very excited about the new baby. Last night we watched a video of someone giving birth. I have to admit it was quite a shock to see what my wife will have to go through. And – I know it sounds selfish – I could not help but wonder if her vagina would be the same after the birth. It is going to stretch so much. I do not want to discuss this with my wife because she is the one that will have to endure all the pain!

It is completely understandable that you would be worried about this. Luckily, nature works in mysterious ways, and it has the ability to make such memorable moments happen without causing any permanent damage.

Before and during birth, special hormones are released that help the vagina prepare for the stretching that is going to take place. The hormones help the muscles and ligaments to relax and make it more elastic.

Think of a balloon. If you add air to it and you release the air immediately, the balloon deflates and returns back to its normal size. Your wife’s vagina will be stretched in the same way for a short space of time.

Watching a birth video can be scary if you are going through the birthing process for the first time, but the organs and muscles return back to normal once the baby is born. It normally takes about six weeks, depending on the baby’s size and how the birth went.

The use of instruments increases the chance of damage to the vagina. This could lead to painful sex and it can cause a woman to leak urine. Thankfully tongs are hardly used nowadays. Doctors prefer using the suction method when help is needed.

Some women do experience incontinence (lack of voluntary control of urination or defecation) after having a baby. This can be rectified by doing Kegel exercises. Support your wife if this is a problem and remind her to do her exercises. Don’t worry, your sex life will resume in no time!
