Ac­cord­ing to the med­i­cal jour­nal Lancet in 2016, op­ti­mal breast­feed­ing would pre­vent around 823 000 in­fant deaths per year, mostly – but cer­tainly not ex­clu­sively – in de­vel­op­ing coun­tries. In ad­di­tion, breast can­cer would claim 20 000 fewer vic­tims if all moth­ers breast­fed for a year.
