REAL PEOPLE How SA celebs are spending Christmas
FROM FAVOURITE GO-TO CHRISTMAS DISHES TO KITCHEN DISASTERS THEY’RE DETERMINED TO AVOID THIS YEAR, A FEW OF SA’S CELEBRITIES SHARE THEIR PLANS FOR SPENDING THIS SPECIAL TIME WITH THEIR FAMILIES
With her Santa toilet seat cover ready from November, media personality Liezel van
der Westhuizen is super excited for the Christmas holidays. She’ll be spending time with family and her adorable two-year-old nieces, before jetting off to Mozambique.
‘Ilove the festive vibe around this time of year, as well as the chance to get to see my family and enjoy quality time together, without the distraction of work,’ says Liezel. ‘I’m definitely looking forward to seeing my twin nieces – they’ve just turned two, so this will be a very special Christmas for them.’ Every year Liezel hosts a pre-christmas lunch during November, for all the family members who are travelling and unable to make the official Christmas Day event. ‘I have all the decorations out from November, including my Santa toilet seat cover,’ she giggles. Then Liezel’s mom hosts the entire family on the 25th and everyone has their own specialty dishes they take along with them for the feast. ‘I’m always in charge of the dessert; I make an incredible raspberry semifreddo!
‘As a child, I remember the excitement of waking up on Christmas morning and jumping into bed with my folks to wake them up, just so we could open presents together. She still looks forward to opening all the gifts under the tree, but after the not-so-desirable gift she’s received before, she’s secretly praying it doesn’t turn out to be a disaster. ‘I once received a pair of dark blue XXL
pyjamas from a work colleague – I’m only a medium! Needless to say, I’ve never used them. Luckily my boyfriend made up for it last year when he got me a pair of bright pink roller skates – I felt like a kid again! I can safely say they’re my all-time favourite gift.’
Being a fitness fanatic (she trains six days a week doing a variety of gruelling workouts, including mountain biking, road cycling, swimming and aerial yoga, and takes part in the Ironman Challenge and Dusi Canoe Marathon), Liezel usually heads out on a deep-sea diving expedition the week after Christmas. This year she’ll be heading to Quirimbas National Park in northern Mozambique and says she can’t wait!
