Julia Anastasopoulos,

Your Family - - Real People -

TV personality, author of new cookbook, Recipes by Suzelle DIY, and South Africa’s favourite queen of life hacks, gives us her favourite tips for throwing the best Christmas party, and believes you can always rely on a good G&T to get the party started!

For the last few years, Julia has been making South African audiences roll on the floor with laughter with her hilarious skits on life hacks as Suzelle. Little do people know that even when she spends downtime at home, she still has the best tricks on throwing a fabulous Christmas party. ‘I like to have a fun theme for the day, as this makes planning the menu, decor and activities much easier. Be resourceful and use things you have around the house: pick flowers from your own garden, upcycle jars and tins for the decorations, and why not paint a branch and bedazzle it instead of buying a traditional Christmas tree?’

Growing up, Julia’s family would always spend the festive season at their holiday house in Sheffield Beach on the north coast of Kwazulu-natal. These days the whole family usually gathers in Cape Town where all Julia’s sisters live. But this Christmas will be a little different – it’ll be spent at the family home in Joburg, where Julia’s parents have lived for 40 years. It’s going to be a very special day and Julia’s looking forward to a quiet Joburg Christmas.

‘My younger sister, Stephanie, is the foodie of the family, so she’s always in charge of the menu and orchestrates the food department. Usually, each of us brings a dish or two we’ve made ourselves.’ Julia’s cookbook features a range of traditional South African recipes with her own unique twist. For her Christmas lunch contribution this year, she’ll be including some inspiration from her book. ‘I love a bread and butter pudding. In the book we used croissants instead of bread, and it’s absolutely to die for! So I think that will be my go-to dish. And there’s nothing like a fancy G&T to get the party started!’
